The Brothers' War: Civil War Voices in Verse by J. Patrick Lewis

This is a great National Geographic book for students to read while studying the Civil War. It is full of real photographs taken during Civil War times, as well as poetry written by people during the Civil War times. Each of the authentic poems is paired an with authentic photograph, as well as a description of what the poem and photograph represent in history. The last few pages of the book contain a map of the United States during the Civil War, a time line of the Civil War, as well as a note about the photography and poems. It is a book that is absolutely full of information, and some of the photographs will really grab your attention. It is a great book to have for classroom lessons during Civil War studies. You could read a few poems to the class each day, and look at the pictures. It would really bring the subject to life for the students to hear the thoughts of the people who lived the history that they are learning about. It is a great book for integrating literature and social studies.
